Northwestern Oklahoma State Soccer traveled to Hays, Kansas for the season's first road game after three straight at home. Fort Hays struck late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead over the Rangers. The Tigers went on to shut the Rangers out in the second half to hold onto the 1-0 victory.
Northwestern with the loss suffered their first of the season and fell to 2-1-1 on the 2022 season while Fort Hays State improved to 3-0-1.
Overall the Rangers were out shot 17-6 in the game and 5-2 on goal. Abby Nunez and Isabella Mcmillan each finished with two shots overall and one on goal. Kailani Kealoha and Tiara Campbell had the other two shots. Rachel Brown saved four of the five shots she was faced with in the game.
In the opening half the Tigers looked to get their offense started early with a couple of quick shots but the Ranger defense blocked both attempts slowing down the opposing attack. Rangers had their first opportunity at the six minute mark following a corner kick but the shot was blocked by the Tiger defense. After 35 minutes of scoreless play, Fort Hays State found a scoring opportunity and took advantage. After the Ranger defense blocked two shots including one on goal the Tigers made the follow up shot for a 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way into the halftime break as the Rangers trailed 1-0. Fort Hays led in shots 11-3 over the Rangers.
Fort Hays opened the second half with the first shot attempt looking to extend their lead but hte Ranger defense was there to stop the attack. Rangers had a scoring opportunity in the 62nd minute on a corner kick after For Hays defended the corner the Rangers then missed a shot high left.
The two teams traded shots in the final five minutes of the game as the Rangers final shot on goal came in the 85th minute of the night before the Tiger goalkeeper made the save to hold on for the 1-0 game for the win.
This is the first time the Rangers have been shutout this season and the Tigers third shutout of the year. Northwestern will return to action on Thursday September 8th at 5:00 PM in Texas against Midwestern State University.
