The Lady Rangers returned to action for the first time in the New Year against Southern Arkansas. The Muleriders closed out the 68-62 victory over Northwestern following a strong middle of the fourth quarter going on a 10-2 run taking a 61-52 lead before closing the win out.
The Lady Rangers fall to 6-3 on the season with a 2-3 conference record. Camille Thomas and Nikya Orange each scored over 20 as Thomas finished with 25 points and Orange with her first double double of the season scoring 20 points while adding 10 rebounds.
First Quarter:
Orange got the scoring started with a layup a minute into the game giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead early on. Southern Arkansas answered back by knocking down their first three pointer of the game before a quick 4-0 run by Orange had the Rangers up 6-3 halfway through the quarter. Straight out of the media timeout the Muleriders tied the game at 6 following a foul shot. Paige Scott answered back with a three regaining the lead at 9-6, however Southern Arkansas hit two straight to push in front right before the end of the quarter hitting a triple with one minute left taking a 12-9 lead into the second quarter.
Second Quarter:
The Lady Rangers opened the quarter on a 6-0 run on six straight points from Camille Thomas taking a 15-12 lead. Carly Craig scored five straight following a three pointer helping Northwestern take a 22-17 lead with 5:19 left in the quarter. Northwestern continued to hold that lead forcing the Muleriders into tough shots and a few turnovers. The Lady Rangers led 26-23 before Southern Arkansas closed the half on a 7-0 run to take the lead 30-26 into halftime.
Third Quarter:
The Muleriders started the half where they left off the first half knocking down a three pointer at the 9:08 mark to start the second half scoring and taking a 33-26 lead pushing their run to 10-0. Orange stopped the run with a mid-range jump shot. Northwestern's defense intensified following the Muleriders taking their largest lead to point at 37-29 at the 7:20 mark before Northwestern went on a 7-0 run started by Camillie Thomas. Southern Arkansas ended the run after being held scoreless until the 3:06 mark in just over four minutes. Chrissen Harland hit a three pointer cutting the Ranger deficit to one at 44-43 through three quarters.
Fourth Quarter:
The first points of the fourth quarter were not scored until the 8:07 mark following a jump shot by Camille Thomas giving Northwestern the lead at 45-44. Southern Arkansas answered back eventually at the 7:20 mark taking a 46-45 lead. The two teams went back and forth trading leads before a quick 6-0 run pushed Southern Arkansas' lead to 52-48 with 5:29 left to play which was just enough separation to push away as they opened their largest lead at 61-52 with 1:52 left to go. The Lady Rangers got as close as five before Southern Arkansas closed out the 68-62 victory Thursday.
The Lady Rangers will return home on Saturday afternoon for a 1:00 PM tip-off against Arkansas Monticello.
